Doody-Free Water Project Donates 15,000 Dog Waste Bags to Raleigh NC Parks
With sights set on keeping Raleigh’s waterways free of dog waste pollution, the Doody-Free Water Project is donating 15,000 dog waste bags to area parks and greenways.
Launched in April 2014, the Doody-Free Water Project is on a mission to build a nationwide movement for dog waste pickup. In Raleigh, the project is partnering with the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, which currently manages 26 pet waste stations across three off-leash dog parks and nine greenways located throughout the city.
Organized by Galya Mann, founder of Doodycalls Wake County and local Doody-Free Water Project partner, the 15,000-bag donation will take place on Thursday, July 3, at the head of the Lake Lynn Greenway Trail. Following the delivery of bags to Raleigh Parks Superintendent, Wayne Schindler, at 3:00 PM, DoodyCalls will volunteer time to sweep the trail of all dog waste. The community is invited to join DoodyCalls in their cleaning efforts and the company will provide all necessary supplies.
The dog waste bags donated by the Doody-Free Water Project will be distributed between three Raleigh parks: Lake Lynn Greenway Trail, Lake Johnson Greenway Trail and Millbrook Dog Park. Parks were selected based on several factors, including proximity to local waterways, public accessibility, estimated bag usage and expressed need.
“This is the first of many efforts to come,” says Mann. “We are committed to expanding public access to dog waste bags in Raleigh and we are thrilled to be working alongside the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources to help keep our local waterways clean.”
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, dog waste is an environmental pollutant. The EPA estimates that 2-3 days worth of droppings from a population of about 100 dogs can contribute enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay and all watershed areas within 20 miles to swimming and shell fishing.
